carset horn to bamba zonke

There are two unrelated stories that led to the title of this drawing but which loosely describe the area covered in this drawing!

The first happened shortly after our family moved to the area and was heading out for our Sunday walk. Not being familiar with the area my Dad had stopped the car to ask someone for directions and instead of asking how to get to Carsethorn he got the pronunciation a bit wrong and said Carset-horn! So close and yet so far- and in more ways than one as I think we were actually in Kirkbean. Anyway, it was a bit embarrassing but we were happy to remind him, often!
The second part relates to when I worked on Ordnance Survey maps at the Registers of Scotland. I had been particularly taken with the house names listed for Southerness and thought it was fantastic that the various wee holiday cottages and chalets had quite fancy names. I was quite taken with ‘The Ponderosa’ but in the end chose the equally impressive Bamba Zonke for my purposes. I have been round Southerness, in search of Bamba Zonke but without success so perhaps the house name has changed. I have checked what it means and apparently it’s a cry of a victory– “Take all!”

So my drawing is from Carset Horn to Bamba Zonke!
